As the students on the Graphic Design MA need to produce a well designed PDF of their work from the module, I will be running a type & layout workshop. The students come from a range of creative backgrounds, but few have strong typographic and editorial skills. This project will be fairly basic and introductory, as we don’t have much time to go into depth in this week. The theme is revisited again later in the module so this will actually be pretty beneficial as a taster of what’s to come.

I need to start thinking about the content and structure of both the webcast and session this week, as it’s not long until it needs to be put into action! Type and layout is not my main area of design so even for me it will be a learning curve.

How can I run the workshop effectively? I will need to think about student numbers (if in groups, how many?), what they will need to design in the live session (what material do I need to prepare for them, or get them to come to the class with?) and how they will be designing (do they all have indesign?).

Attached is my flipped classroom plan for a session on the basics of layout and typography. This will be held halfway through the first module of their MA, and will help them gain some basic skills that will be used throughout the rest of the course and beyond. As a lot of of the students have little or no training or skills in editorial design, this will be quite new to them all. They will need to produce a designed pdf of their module journal at the end of the term for assessment, so this will be aimed at getting them thinking about this ahead of time. I think the design for the live session still needs refinement, it needs to be interactive and useful – I want the students to work in groups. It makes sense to give them the materials needed for the exercise so that they just have to focus on the act of laying out and considering what fonts would be most suitable for the subject matter, but what themes should I pick for these exercises?
