This week has been enlightening in the creation of out-of-class material, it's been really useful for helping me refine my approach and understanding of online learning. The exercise of creating a plan for the flipped classroom helped me solidify my idea for the session and the recorded material. I have decided to keep the amount of new skills very simple and clear, not trying to cover too much, and focus on the key foundation skills.
I ran a quiz during a webinar with the group intended for the FC and my preconception of their skill levels was validated – the knowledge of layout design is very low. This means that my students are all of a similar level which is good for a level playing field. The reading material for the week helped me see the importance of blending the active and passive learning opportunities, always linking it back to the learning outcomes of the course.
It was interesting reading about what kind of content to use in which parts of the session and how to structure them, and how to use the online format to best effect. It is also important to keep the students engaged when working online, by setting challenges throughout the recorded content.
